“Opening the Gate” to make way for the catcher
Reverse pivot on your front foot to “open the gate” for the catcher
- The reverse pivot technique is an effective way to make room for the catcher when he needs to quickly retrieve a pitched ball that gets passed him. With practice, you’ll be able to provide the catcher with an immediate path to the ball while maintaining your balance.
- Once you’ve “opened the gate” and facing the catcher, you’ll be able to decide where to move next if he throws the ball. You’ll be better able to anticipate the direction of the throw if you were keeping track of base runners at the time of the pitch.
- The two videos show the same technique for a right or left-handed batter. Start your stance with your left foot forward on right-handed batters; right foot forward for left-handed batters. Refer to Slot Position graphic on the plate positioning page.
