Making a Call at Home Plate

Leading Edge Position

- Standing behind the leading edge (3rd base side) of the plate is typically easier for most beginning umpires to learn.  Stand behind the baseline facing the edge of home plate.  From this spot, look for the ball and tag when the runner reaches the plate.

 

-  This position is typically best when the catcher is standing in the baseline to make the tag.  But you risk not seeing a tag on an underthrown ball as it might be applied to the side that is obscured from your vantage point.
