Signaling infield fly rule is on (baseball)
Plate and Base Umpires: Signal when the infield fly rule is in effect by indicating the number of outs with your right hand to the cap (baseball).
- Signal to one another when the infield fly rule is in effect, just prior to a new batter taking the batter’s box. If the batter hits an infield fly, you’ll only have a few seconds to make the call, so the signal between you and the other umpires will ensure you’re ready to make the infield fly call. Check the site glossary for a description of the infield fly rule.
- The Plate and Base Umpire use the same signal to indicate that the infield fly rule is on. For baseball, place the index finger (one out) of your right hand or a fist (no outs) to the brim of your cap.
- If the batter hits an infield fly, any umpire can make the call (“infield fly, batter's out!”).
