Confirming number of outs

Plate and Base Umpires:  Signal the number of outs with outstretched hands and fingers to indicate each out

-  After an out is made and just before a new batter enters the batter’s box, signal to one another the number of outs, using outstretched hands and fingers for each out.  The signal, also known as “flashing outs”, is the same for plate and base umpires.  The plate umpire signals to the base umpires.  The base umpires signal to the plate umpire.

-  The videos show two outs, using the two furthest fingers (index and pinky), to make it easier to see.  Use the index finger to indicate one out and a clenched fist to signal no outs.

-  Continue play whether or not every umpire responds to your signal.

-  Flashing outs at the outset of each new play will help you to better anticipate plays and rulings in specific situations.  Examples:

  • A runner must tag up on a caught, fly ball when there are less than two outs.  If he doesn’t, you might have to rule on an appeal by the manager.
  • Your enforcement of the dropped third strike rule is different in a two-out situation versus with one or no outs.
  • The infield fly rule only applies when there are less than two outs.
