Base Umpiring Advanced Techniques Video

Two Person Crew - Covering a Steal by a First Base Runner

When a runner on 1st base and you anticipate a steal, there are two starting position options, each with pros and cons.  Starting at the B Slot (video 1) is generally easier for beginners.

- Runner on 1st base (1B).  Base Umpire (BU1) starts in B Slot.

- Runner attempts steal at 2nd base (2B), catcher tries to throw him out.

- BU1 moves from B Slot to a position behind 2B that allows view of the edge of the 2B bag and tag on the runner.

Pros Cons
Easy to remember (“always stand one base ahead of the lead runner”). Might not see tag on runner if ball is underthrown.
Staying outside of base path avoids potential contact with fielders, runner, thrown ball. If overthrow into the outfield, will have a greater distance to run to if the runner steals 3B.

- Runner on 1st base (1B).  Base Umpire (BU1) starts in modified C Slot (closer to 2B than normal).

- Runner attempts steal at 2nd base (2B), catcher tries to throw him out.

- BU1 moves inside from C Slot to a position that allows view of the play at 2B including the edge of the bag.

Pros Cons
Great view of play including underthrow from catcher. If too close to 2B, might get hit by thrown ball.
Better starting position for call at 3B if runner decides to steal 3B on an overthrow. Will miss tag on poor throws that require tag at the backside of the runner.
