Calling a runner out on the infield fly rule
Any umpire can make the infield fly call by pointing in the air at the ball and shouting “infield fly, batter's out!”
- If the batter hits into the infield fly rule, any umpire (base or home plate) can make the call (“infield fly, batter's out!”). You should make the call when the fly ball is near its peak or shortly after it starts to descend. Don't call the infield fly (batter out) once the ball reaches the fielder.
- When you make the infield fly call, the batter is automatically out, regardless as to whether a fielder catches the ball. The ball (play) is still live and any other runners are at risk, as if no infield fly ruling was called. Similarly, runners have to tag up on a caught ball and are not required to tag up if dropped.
